Susann D'Antonio has a BA in Fine Art and wanted to be an artist since childhood. She discovered gourds several years ago and became enamored with the possibilities they presented. They are sculptural but can also be wood-burned, painted, embellished; the possibilities are endless. She likes to weave on the gourds, using sea grass or a waxed linen coiling. Embellishments include Huichol Indian style beading designs of cutout shapes which are adhered to the gourd. Wood-burned designs are also a favorite technique, which will be finished with a woven rim. Susann has a line of Birds of Paradise, which are whimsical birds made from gourds and feathers. They each come with their own name tag describing their specific species of tropical bird.
Susann and her husband Bob, also are owners of Framing in Paradise,
custom frame shop, located in the back of the gallery. Featuring a
large selection of frames and mats. Unusual projects are welcome as well, any needlework or shadowbox items can be creatively framed. |
